There Are IQ Tests And Creativity Tests - How About Those Who Score High On Both?

The other day, I was talking to an individual who scored over 138 on the IQ test. That's a pretty smart person, and although many folks claim that they are of that intelligence level, it isn't as common as you might think. In fact, by the time you get up to 145 and 155, you're almost talking one in 1 million. Interestingly enough the same individual scored extremely high on the Torrance Test of Creativity. It isn't often when someone scores off the chart on both the IQ tests and the creativity tests.
However, it does happen that is to say those that score high on both the Stanford-Binet Test and Torrance Test of Creativity. What might a person be able to do who scored that high on both? Well, I would submit to you that they can do whatever they want, and we don't even have to tell them what to do, they are creative enough to find their own niche and run with it. All we should do is support them in whatever it is they want to do, because chances are whatever that is they will do it well, and better than anyone else might. Do you see my point?
The reason I make this statement is not in personal reflection necessarily, but rather from a think tank recruiter's point of view, as I am able to talk to brilliant creative geniuses quite often. It is truly amazing some of the innovations, ideas, and original thoughts they come up with, sometimes on a daily basis; no kidding. You might not find these individuals willing to spend an awful lot of time in academia, and you probably won't find them joining the government as a bureaucrat - although, sometimes you can, and sometimes they hide out unbeknownst to the rest of us trying to blend into the scenery of society.
Indeed, I would submit to you that it would behoove our nation to find these individuals, help them along with whatever they need, and run a little interference and block for them while they run for a touchdown. We must not be too hasty to demand that they conform to society's every whim, rather we should ask them how to transform our society to meet their objectives, unleashing armies of these types of individuals because that would truly propel the future of mankind, and keep our nation in the lead. Understanding Autism and Tantrums

It is expected that if you have young children they will experience temper tantrums. However, parents of children with autism and disorders on the autism spectrum scale are often faced with more severe tantrums and meltdowns. Many parents describe feeling isolated, defeated, overwhelmed and even unable to leave their home due to the frequency and severity of the tantrums. Generally, children will experience tantrums if they are tired, hungry or upset. As we learn about our children's mood and behaviors, we gradually learn to predict when they may experience difficulty.
However, with autistic children, tantrums often are unpredictable. One reason they occur is due to their inability to understand the message being communicated. At times, this occurs in situations where the child is asked to shift their attention from one activity to something else. Children who do not suffer from developmental disabilities may struggle with tantrums when asked to shift from something enjoyable, watching their favorite movie to something that is not preferred, preparing for bed. However, autistic children can easily experience difficulty even when the shift is to another pleasant activity. Autistic children's inability to understand and recognize that the new activity can also be enjoyable can result in tantrums. Another reason why autistic children experience tantrums is related to difficulty with transition. These types of tantrums are often related to the child's inability to understand the message entirely. For example, telling an autistic child that you are going to take him or her for ice cream, may result in a tantrum when it is time to leave. The child's inability to make a connection between ice cream and time to leave may have been interpreted as something else.
For autistic children, tantrums are a way of expressing themselves. Escalation occurs when their needs/wants are not being met. Tantrums though, are not just related to an autistic child's inability to understand the message. They are also in part related to the parent's inability to understand the message the child is attempting to convey. For example, a parent may offer an autistic child some cookies as a snack however; the child desires ice cream and proceeds to have a meltdown. A parent may try to offer other options however; the child does not have the ability to communicate his or her desire for ice cream.
One technique to help reduce tantrums is to implement visual aids. Giving an autistic child a visual aid for each transition (i.e. a visual aid of the car when you indicate it is time to leave and another visual aid of the restaurant at the time you are driving) can reduce the likelihood the child will misunderstand the message. Visual aids that represent time, along with periodic reminders, can also help an autistic child comprehend that the time for the activity is coming to an end. Another technique that can be helpful is using sequential visual aids (i.e. using 3 pictures on a strip). Sequential visual aids can help autistic children learn not only natural progressions but also visually see each task being completed and what remains.
Significant research supports that music is beneficial for autistic children. Since language acquisition is processed in the left cerebral hemisphere of the brain and music is processed on the right cerebral hemisphere, researchers believe that autistic children are able to comprehend language by the brain shifting to using the right cerebral hemisphere. Providing directions to an autistic child using a melody can help the child comprehend the request being made. Using techniques that are more understandable, such as music can reduce the pressure the child may feel and also make the activity more enjoyable. Providing directions while snapping fingers, tapping your foot or changing the pitch in your tone as you speak can help a child not only comprehend what is being asked but also predict what may be asked in the future.

What Is Nature Vs Nurture?

Nature, as the word insinuates, is what we inherited from our parent's strictly by being conceived. We inherited our eye color, hair color and any other physical attributes that can be "seen" by the human eye. The argument that nature influences us the most also suggests that we are predetermined to act like our parents, be mental equals to our parents, and have similar personalities. But nature seems to neglect the different life experiences we go through as we mature.
For instance, when we begin to walk (at a young age) we deduct that to get from point A to point B we must avoid obstacles (a kitchen table, a wall etc.). According to the nature debate we "just know" that walking through a table is not acceptable because we inherited that from our parents (after all they don't walk through tables).
Another example of nature in action could be that of a kitten. A kitten seems to "just know" that in order to relieve themselves they must use a litter box. There is no training involved no error involved in the process. How does that work?
Nurture on the other hands argues that it is our life experiences that tailor who we become as adults. Nurture suggests that we are molded by the experiences we encounter throughout life. Every experience we go through somehow teaches us to conquer another experience.
If we revisit our learning to walk analogy one could assume that there were many tables that were walked into prior to "mastering" the skill of walking. In essence as a toddler we learned to not walk through tables but to walk around those obstacles in our mission. Bringing nurture into play because we "learned" that it is indeed impossible to walk through an inanimate object at some point.
However nurture is unable to explain our kitten analogy above. Nurture is more inclined to suggest that kittens somehow learned to utilize a litter box rather than "just knowing" from birth to do so.
It stands to mention that both nature and nurture must come into play in both our walking and kitten analogy. Had our new walker not bumped into a few tables along the way (or used those tables as a "guide") he or she would not have "learned" to avoid tables. On the other hand our kitten has never used a litter box before but inherently knows that it is the only acceptable way to relieve themselves.
I believe that nature and nurture both come into play at certain points in our lives. I also believe that we are prone to make similar decisions to that of our parents, have similar desires and emotions as that of our parents. However, along the way as we experience life we tend to build our own personas based off of the experience we go through. Not the experiences our parents (after all we were yet to be conceived) went through to become the human beings they are.
